Personal Car Leasing
Explore how personal vehicle leasing works, what affects monthly rentals and what to consider before choosing a contract.
What is personal contract hire?
Personal contract hire (PCH) is a way to use a vehicle for an agreed period in exchange for rental payments. You normally return the vehicle at the end rather than owning it. The exact rights and obligations depend on the contract and provider.
Understanding the full cost
A monthly headline rental is only one part of the picture. Compare the initial rental, number of monthly payments, administration charges, any maintenance package, excess mileage rates, end-of-contract condition charges and other contractual costs. A larger initial rental may reduce the monthly payment without necessarily reducing the overall amount paid.
Choosing the right mileage
Estimate your annual mileage realistically. A contract with a lower mileage allowance may have a more attractive headline price but can incur excess mileage charges if you exceed the agreed limit. Check how mileage is assessed over the term.
Contract duration and flexibility
Common contract terms include 24, 36 and 48 months, but availability varies. Early termination can be costly. Consider how long you genuinely need the vehicle and whether your circumstances may change.
Maintenance, insurance and road tax
Some agreements include certain maintenance services and others do not. Insurance is usually arranged separately by the customer. Always read the provider’s actual contract to understand servicing, tyres, breakdown support, vehicle tax and other responsibilities.
Vehicle return and condition
At the end of a lease, the vehicle is usually returned. Fair wear and tear standards, missing equipment, damage and excess mileage can affect final charges. Keep servicing and condition records throughout the agreement.
